Dog Microchip Back

Getting your dog microchipped is a simple, safe way to identify them if they were to become lost and could significantly increase the chances of getting them back. Wearing collars and identification tags is always recommended, yet they are often lost or removed. The microchip that is implanted is roughly the size of a grain of rice and is implanted under the pet's skin between the shoulder blades. Here at Burford Veterinary Hospital, there are no monthly fees associated with your dog’s microchip; meaning it is a one-time service and fee that lasts forever. We recommend microchipping your pet at the time of spaying/neutering but can be done at anytime if desired. The reason we recommend it at time of spay/neuter is that implanting the microchip is done via a large gauge needle. Pets may react a little bit during this process, so performing it while anesthetized for spay/neuter may be easier on them.

How microchips work:

Once the staff has implanted the microchip, you will be provided with a form that goes over how to register your pet. You may fill it out and mail it in to the company or simply fill out the application form on their website!

Once your pet is registered, their microchip number will be added into the international database. Then, if your pet is lost, other veterinary offices, shelters, animal control, etc. can scan your pet and contact the microchip company. From there, the veterinary office, shelter, animal control, etc. will contact you with the personal information provided to get your pet home safely!
